The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
