The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month break that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
