Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a stake in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos Group, who both hold one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no official statement on this. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned more than $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie to date.

Current Standings

Mercedes are second in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
